Katie runs a 501(c)(3) registered non-profit called Unsheltered Tortoise and Turtle. We own 4.5 acres next to the Long Creek Family Entertainment site that will be used for the non-profit. This will provide a sanctuary home to non-wild turtles and tortoises in need as well as offer rehab care for injured local wild turtles. This site will also be home to bees as well as many native trees and plants. You can learn more at www.unshelterednc.com
In 2023, we welcomed two tortoises to the sanctuary, rehabbed multiple injured box turtles and supported other local wildlife rehabbers.
Unsheltered Tortoise and Turtle provides education for the community on the care and needs of turtles. Children and adults alike can benefit from the knowledge. For example, wild box turtles have a homing instinct and spend most of their lives in a small radius. They should not be moved from where they are living. If you find an injured one, contact your local wildlife rehabber for care and ensure you know where you picked the turtle up from.
